A New Light Painting Workshop: Big M

Mike Hows and Aaron Siladi have announced a new one-night light painting workshop to be held at Big M Automotive on Saturday, March 27th. Big M is an automotive yard near Williams, CA, which specializes in rare and classic Murcurys and Plymouths from the mid to late 1950's and early 1960's. It is less than two hours north of the San Francisco Bay Area.

You can read more details about the workshop and the Big M automotive yard right here.

Keith Carter

While reading Brooks Jensen's "new" blog, I was introduced to the work of Keith Carter. Keith is on the faculty of the Lamar University in Beaumont, TX. He has a project called Nocturnes, which features black-and-white, contrasty photographs taken (obviously) at night.

Most of his work uses dreamy soft focus around the edges. I encourage to browse through "regular" (daytime) photographs, as well. Keith's website also includes a video interview, as well as all of his books (including a twenty five-year monograph).

Pietro Masturzo - World Press Photo Winner for 2010

Pietro Masturzo's night photograph below was the winner of this year's World Press Photo contest. This photograph pictures women shooting in protest in Tehran on June 24th.

From the World Press Photo page:

The winning photograph is part of a story depicting the nights
following the contested presidential elections in when people
shouted their dissent from roofs and balconies, after daytime
protests in the streets.

Peitro's home page also has more great night shots of rooftops in Tehran.

Read more about this photograph and the accompanying story. You can also listen to a recording of Pietro's reaction to hearing that he was the winner.

Day of Remembrance

For the past three years I have been photographing the Day of Remembrance ceremony in San Jose, California's Japantown. This ceremony commemorates the anniversary of Executive Order 9066 that led to the forced incarceration of 120,000 Americans of Japanese descent (two-thirds of whom were American citizens). The photo below was taken at night during the candlelight march through San Jose's Japantown.

Kevin Cooley

Kevin Cooley is a commercial photographer who has done a lot of night photography in his personal work. His Iceland project looks at the quality of light at night during the shortest days of the year. His Lights Edge project is a study of flares shot into the sky at night, and his Nacthflug project is a study of urban scenes that include a myriad of trails of airplanes in the night sky. On the surface, these may not sound very interesting, but if you take a look at his website I think you'll be surprised.

I learned about Kevin through the Strobist website, which features Kevin's promotional video. The author poses an interesting question, "Why doesn't every photographer have a promo video like that?"

Blake Gordon

Take a look at Blake Gordon's Reality TV series. Although Blake is not primarily a night photographer, he takes advantage of the night environment to provide more depth and variety to his project.
